Running Update

If anyone from the Pacific Northwest is interested, NW VEG is having a 5k and 10k Race for the Animals on June 25th! I am participating in the 10k, and I am very excited! It is my first official 10k race. I have no qualms about not finishing the race because I have been running 18ish miles a week, with at least 6 or 7 on my "long" day. And I have been increasing my distance. It's just absolutely crazy how the running bug can really grab you and change your life.

Before I started running regularly, I viewed running as a punishment. Now, I live for it! I get frustrated if a few days go by and I haven't managed to squeeze a run in! I have participated in a couple 5K races. The Race for the Animals will be my first 10k. And next month, I will participate in my first half marathon in the Lacamas Lake Run Walk Race!

I can honestly tell you right now that I just adore running, and I hope to be a runner for the rest of my life.

I did not die. I took a brief leave of absence. I am back, and it was worth it. I really focused on my studies this term; I think I got a 4.0.

Anyway. K had a birthday since the last time I posted. I can't believe he is two now!

Today, Kaegan found this piece of cardboard. He looked at me and said that he had an idea, followed by his sign [language] for book. Next, he took the cardboard to his coloring station and started to color on it. I went over to him and asked if he was making a book. He simply replied "uh-huh!" with a head nod. I love my creative little guy. After he was done coloring, we went through the book and talked about it. I labeled everything, as according to him, so that in the years to follow we can still cherish this little book. So cute.

IT'S SPRING BREAK. Yes.

I made this tree for my Spanish presentation... and now it's my son's monkey's home.

However, he doesn't really care for it. He is more interested in how it works. Go figure.

It's that time of the term again. Frantically trying to finish papers while still keeping my composure. I'm not sure if I have successfully kept it, but we will see.

I already received my grade for my Art in the Treccento Siena class; I got a 95 percent! YES.

Currently, I am taking a break from finishing my Modern art history paper, which is almost done. I have the conclusion left to write. And generally, I don't have a hard time writing this part of the paper, but for some reason, I am struggling with it. I know it has to be perfect to tie everything together...

The paper is about Pablo Picasso's Head of a Woman (Tête de femme), 1909

And Constantin Brancusi's A Muse, 1918.

Both works can be seen at the Portland Art Museum.

Oops. I have been very neglectful of my blogs (food blog)! I have been doing a lot of school work, seeing a lot of good friends, and running! I signed up for my first 5k.... I'm very excited that it is going to be the Shamrock Run Portland!

I promise, I will continue this blog! I am currently working on two research papers for my art history classes. One is on Sassetta, a Sienese painter from the quattrocento. And the other paper is on two sculptures, one by Picasso and the other by Brancusi. Wish me luck. I need it.

Anyway... here is a visual update (in no particular order of time):

My dear friend's daughter turned two recently. Today was her birthday celebration. Because handmade is best, earlier in the week I took a trip to the craft store. I saw some rolls of tulle and thought: TUTU. Then, I saw some awesome fabric of faeries and thought... DOLL. So, the gift was born.

Sliced.

Onions.

Tomatoes.

Mushrooms.

Tofu, soaked in choice sauce (the longer, the better). Stir periodically.

Garlic.

Oil, 2 second count. Heat. Aromatics, until the house smells good (rule of thumb, 30 seconds).

Proteins.

Semi-Browned.

Kale.

Mushrooms.

Tomatoes.

Serve!

The only tools I need. Bamboo Utensil. Sharp Knife.

This tastes especially awesome served over quinoa, which I neglected to make today. Oh well.

I hope day one and two have been pleasant for you. This year, so far, has been awesome. My body is already sore from running, but I'm loving it. I'm excited to build my strength and endurance.

School starts tomorrow. This past winter break went by extremely fast. On the agenda for school: art history, art history, and Spanish. I wouldn't want it any other way. =]

My dad is having major back surgery tomorrow and he will be off work for quite some time. It's going to be super hard for him, Mr. workout man, because he isn't allowed to lift more than 5 lbs for, I think, two months! The hardest thing for him is going to be having to sit and play with K. He adores my son so much (first grandbaby).

Happy New Year! Well, not quite yet, but maybe it is for you? Sometime during the week, I am going to post a reflection, but I'm not quite ready yet. However, I will share another resolution of mine (read another one here).

I want and need to become more social. Since having a baby, I have been very hesitant to hang out with old friends or make new ones. I feel guilty when I ask my family to watch K more than they already do (while I'm at school), so it is easier for me to not even bother to plan something with a friend. I really feel lonely at times and I want to change that. I can safely say that there is no need to worry about me being lonely or about me being too social, like a lot of moms I know or knew from the past. I want to join a mom's group and meet some like minded ladies. I want to be able to go have a fun night every now and then. And last, but not least, I want to become more involved in a social/art scene.

And I shall end this post. Here are some photos I took this morning. Brrr it has been cold.

PS. I LOVE MY NIKON. I am really exploring the manual settings. =]

A Haunting Experience

Yesterday was a very emotional and horrific day that resulted in a trip to the emergency room. I was in the kitchen about to wipe the counters down. My sister, whom is visiting from many states away, was in the family room sitting by the fire. K was sitting in the reclining chair only a few feet from my sister. I heard a thump and rushed out to the family room while Amanda announced that K had fallen. Well, he fell very hard, backwards off the chair, and hit his head on the wood floor. She picked him up and gave him to me to comfort, naturally. He didn't cry, so I thought he was fine... until I looked down at his face. His eyes rolled into the back of his head and his back arched so far, it seemed humanly impossible. This movement that he did wasn't his choice. He body had taken over and he looked lost. After his eyes found the light again, he wouldn't look at anyone or anything. He appeared in another world. Then, he started breathing hard and a gurgling noise arose from him. I thought he was going to throw up. I rushed him upstairs and yelled for my mom to call 911. Then everything that he experienced stopped. We live less than 10 minutes from the hospital, so we put him in the car and rushed there ASAP. On the drive, I kept asking him questions so that he wouldn't fall asleep. By the time we reached the ER, he was back to his normal self.

Everything is fine, as of now. The doctor that checked him out confidently said that his brain was most likely confused about the fall and sent a signal through his body. Then, he instructed me to keep a close eye on him and to bring him back to the ER if he begins to act weird or experience another episode.

The sequence of events keeps running through my head, and it is haunting. I love my son very much. And I want to protect him from any pain and suffering. I keep trying to tell myself that these things happen, but now I'm on alert mood. A simple fall created such a fiasco... what is something else happens? I'm very concerned and scared right now. It is a relief to see him laughing and playing normally, but what if something is wrong?

However, I am very thankful to have, other than what happened yesterday, a healthy and happy child. K has, without a doubt, his needs fulfilled. He is full on running, he says new words all the time, he invents and plays new games, he has a growing sense of self-awareness and independence, and he is very happy.

Run into the New Year

This post is not parenting or art related. Strange. I am going to admit that I have been lazy the past few years. Through out my youth and early college career, I was a fully committed volleyball player. I lived for the sport. I still absolutely love volleyball, but haven't been able (uh-- haven't tried) to find a team/group to play with. Well, volleyball hasn't been on my mind lately. Running has been, which is very strange because I was always the person that claimed to HATE running with a passion. But the last run I went on, something triggered me. I greatly enjoyed the run. In fact, I actually loved that run. Perhaps... I could become a runner?! Parenting and school have become the main focus in my life. I have no time for organized sports. However, I can and WILL make time for running. With all of that said, I am going to announce (one of) my new years resolution:

I am going to become a runner. I am going to run a 5k. And I am going to train to run a half-marathon (most likely the Portland Marathon in October).

I don't want to completely lose faith in this after a week or two come 2011. This upcoming year is going to be mine; I can feel it already. I have already created a near 3 month training program to get back into the swing of running.

I suppose that because I have announced this to the webisphere, I must complete what I have declared? I will. You watch and see.

I am in love with my camera! All I can do is experiment! When I use my 35mm film cameras, I can't play around as much due to high expenses of processing and printing film. I will forever love film and the art to taking a wonderful photo, but with digital, I am going to better my photography skills! Here are a few favorites (all in manual mode!) Oh and for the record, I am going to have a dark room in my future house so I can still explore film.

Merry Christmas!

I fell out of the blogging routine during the past month because I have been working on all the handmade gifts.

However, I am more than happy to report the most amazing and generous gift I have ever received from my parents (besides birth, of course): a Nikon D 5000. WOAH MAMA. I'm stoked. So, prepare yourself for photography goodness during the next...forever.

Before Christmas, I made so many gifts but my favorite was the 3 bats for K.

I made a pattern inspired by a coffee cozy I saw once. And I hand embroidered the faces onto felt.

We painted today. Well, more like K painted and I documented. I love having free time to do things like this with him. Also today, we made play-dough.... and he only tried to eat it once. Maybe that 1/2 a cup of salt had something to do with it. It was fun making it! I made it a lot growing up. =]

Homemade play dough

1 c water
1/2 c salt
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tbsp cream of tartar (although, we left it out because I couldn't find it! It preserves the play dough for 4-6 months in airtight container)
food coloring
1 c flour
sauce pan

In sauce pan, combine water, salt, oil, cream of tartar, and food coloring; heat until warm. Remove from heat and stir in the flour. Kneed until smooth.

You can kneed more color in if you desire. Also, glitter and essences are fun to add into the play dough... get creative!

Careful, it may be very hot if you leave over heat for too long.... like I did. Hey, I'm human!

Where has the time gone?! School is almost done (it will be official tomorrow at 10 am) for the term. I'm so excited to start making Christmas presents now! I have bought all of the materials I need to make everything, but I haven't allowed myself to start until I was done with the term. Man, that took some willpower. I knew that if I started to make something, I was never going to finish my papers or study for my exams.

Yay for arts and crafts.

Anyway.. I have everything planned out except for my dad. I don't want to be lame and buy him a gift when I'm making stuff for everyone else. What the hell am I suppose to make him? Last year, I made him a custom crossfit t-shirt. The problem with my dad is that he is the type of person that when he needs or desires something, he gets it asap. Hmmm. That creates issues on the gift front. So, any ideas on man homemade gifts would be much appreciated.

Oh and I have been thinking a lot about my summer plans. I really want to do some volunteer work with kids and art. I thought it would be fun to start a free program to learn about environmental artworks-- be it recycled arts, earth works, or observing the world around as a flâneur. Just some thoughts going through me lately.

So, I am addicted to thrift shopping. I have the numerous thrift stores memorized. And there is a particular way I have to make my way through the store. The key to successful thrifting is consistency. Sometimes, you won't find anything and other times, you could hit gold. I cycle through the thrift stores throughout the month and I have found some pretty amazing things. Like these amazing Sugar boots.

They are barely worn and are FREAKING AWESOME. I couldn't pass them up for only $6.99. I got a few other things, like a cute jacket and flannel for K. Also, I two books: one in Spanish and one about Vincent van Gogh.

Sometimes while I am thrifting, I question humanity:

SERIOUSLY?! Why would ANYONE ever want their child to have one of these? Yes, let's install fast food into a young and very impressionable mind. It's sickening. Only in America, right?

Halloween Twenty Ten

Happy Halloween! He may not know much about the holiday or about candy... but he sure was excited about something!

K got to paint his pumpkin, something my sisters and I always did growing up as young kids.

In other news: I took my modern art history midterm today. It covered romanticism to synthetism. I am falling more [and more and more] in love with art the more I learn about it. Seriously. I am getting really excited about all the classes I plan to take in the future. I just want to do art, read about art, and live art. I hope Kaegan grows to love and appreciate it.

Oh and in other... other news, I'm dressing up as Frida Kahlo for Halloween. I can't wait to share photos. My costume is going to be awesome. Just sayin'.

I finished making my son's Halloween costume! Here it is... Oh man. I can't wait to see him in it! I plan on having a photo shoot with him in it at the local pumpkin patch, so stay tuned for those photos, because I know they will rock. I think I may order some 120 mm film for my holga.... oh boy, those would be some MAGICAL photos.

Awesome! =] I still have to make the hat, beard, brows, belt, and sew the buttons onto the shirt/dress. I was thinking about making him some felt shoe covers that look like boots or something. I always kept them because I wanted to be able to compare skills and styles throughout the course of my life. But in search for a "slow hunch", I think now would be a good time to dig them out. On Monday, K met his second cousin once removed. I'm pretty sure that's how they are related. Bailey is my mom's cousin's daughter. I'm not too sure how it all works out, but I'm just going to go with she's his cousin. =]

On Tuesday, I started my Spanish class. Oh man, it's going to be interesting this term! My class is a combination of SPAN 221, 222, and 223. I'm in 221... so there are a lot more advanced students in my class. The other reason the term is going to be interesting... it's at 730 in the morning! Yikes. However, it gives me the whole day to do stuff with K. Like I did this week. Right after class, K and I drove two hours to spend the night with our friends Rachel, her boyfriend Brian, and her baby Xyla.

04/30: a picture of you as a kid + 7 facts about your childhood.

Uno: I had a hideous bowl cut because I would fidget too much for anyone to cut my hair somewhat nicely. My mom figured out a way to cut my hair fast.... damn bowl cut. [see attached photo]

Dos: When I was eight or so, this guy named Mark (9) held a knife to my throat because I was playing in "his" fort in "his" section of the woods. My sister came to the rescue and pushed him down a hill.

Tres: In elementary school, these two twins use to make fun of me because (1) my name was spelled like a boy's name (Aaryn), and (2) I had short as heck hair. [see attached photo]

Quatro: When I was young, I entered a coloring contest. I won and received a cheap 35mm camera as a prize. When I went to use the camera for the first time, it was broken. I swore I never was going to do art again because I was so upset about it. You can tell that phase lasted long...

Cinco: When I was 14 or 15, my volleyball team stayed in San Jose, California for a tournament. A lot of scandalous incidents occurred during that trip. Most noteworthy of the events was when a few girls on my team and I witnessed about 20 gang members outside our hotel window get into a huge brawl that included baseball bats, broken car windows, a gun, a few shots, and the police. It was CRAZY, to say the least.

Seis: I saw Coolio in concert when I was nine. Need I say more?

Siete: When I was two or three, my sister (2 years older) was going to the bathroom and I was curious as to what she was doing. She slammed the HEAVY door shut and it actually cut my finger off! They had to sew it back on. Because of that, the growth was all messed up and my "freaky finger" (nickname thanks to Shane) is longer than it should be.

As I previously have mentioned, I created some lino blocks for my aunt and her lady friends, the Rocket City Glass Girls, to use in their glassware. This past weekend, they showed their beautiful creations at the Monte Sano Art Show in Huntsville, AL. Here are some photos of what they created with some of the blocks I created for them.

The "ink" is ground up glass that they actually fused into the plate. It is a very cool process and a new one to the Rocket City Glass Girls. Maybe one day I will have to invest in a kiln so I can also create glass work like my aunt and her friends.

03/30: a habit that you wish you didn’t have.

Hmmm... I would have to say I wish I didn't have the habit of leaving paintbrushes still wet with paint. I swear, every time I paint, I tell myself I am going to do a proper job cleaning up. But it never fails. I get occupied with something else and the next time I go to paint, I find a crusted paint brush. I probably would save some money if I took better care of my brushes; I just don't know why I have a hard time remembering to clean them afterward. And along the same lines, three times this past week, I have left the lid off of the molding paste medium! Luckily, I have realized it soon enough to put it away and not ruin the medium.

02/30: your favorite season + what makes it your favorite.

This is a hard one because I love all the seasons for numerous reasons. But since I haveee to pick one, it would be fall. Here in the pacific northwest, the fall is beautiful. The temperature is mild and the rainy season hasn't entirely started. I love hot soy chai lattes, wearing warmer clothes, and most importantly to note: back to school. I LOVE SCHOOL. I always have and always will. That is one thing that I am very thankful for, my love of school. My parents really did a great job making school a positive and fun thing for my sisters and me. Granted, I have a lot of issues with the public school system, but putting that aside, I love back to school. I love learning, meeting new people and teachers. I start school on Tuesday and I'm just dying inside because of it. Not because I am worried about my classes being hard, but because I want to know my teachers and peers. I'm a nerd, so what.

The Process. . .

I'm tired of feeling constricted. While working on a painting of my dog, I realized (maybe I always knew) that art doesn't have to be contained. I have been constantly battling to find my true aesthetic and style. It's as if I feel I have to keep it organized and bundled into particular categories:

A painting.
A drawing.
A photo.
A print.
A this.
A that.

But the issue I battle with is that, I don't think that is me. I strive for something because it's what I think may work. But I'm realizing that I need to break out of the box and dabble in my OWN creations and experiments. The battle is that I feel I must do it a particular way, a way that is.... expected, perhaps? But the reality is when I do it that way, I either [1] hate it or [2] never finish it. This whole midnight tangent probably makes absolutely no sense, but heh, I'm an artist, right? Ha. Just kidding.

Anyway... While I was painting, I realized that I'm the type of person that can't be constricted when it comes to materials and/or artwork. With that said, I am going to start some experiments that I have been thinking about for quite some time. All I can really say about them is that they are going to be process heavy, yet I'm going to try my hardest to not get caught up on categories and other expectations. I have to get this shit rolling. Seriously. I'm stoked and keep your eyes peeled for some new creations.

01/30: recent picture of you + the meaning behind your blog name

Here is a recent (but not the MOST recent) photo of me. It is from my best friend's (since kindergarten!) college graduation. =] I'm so proud of her.

The meaning behind my blog name is quite simple actually. Well, duh. It's Artistic Madre. The first aspect of my blog's name is due to the fact that I have always been a creative person. I would consider myself an artist. I am no where close to being an professional artist, but one day, I hope to do something great with my work. The second aspect of the name is, obviously, that I am a mother. My son is so incredibly important to me; he is my world. This blog was created to have a place to share my world. I am going to try to combine my two major aspects of my life, who I am, together. My artistic side and my motherly side will not ruin each other. A lot of women artists of the past had to choose the path of motherhood or as an artist. I want both out of life and I will do anything to achieve them.

There ya go, the story behind the name.

I just got my hair cut and colored at Symmetry Salon in the Pearl District. My stylist rocks. Seriously. She knew I wanted something awesome, so a few days before my appointment, she messaged me and asked what color (s) to make sure she had it. She went shopping just for me. AWESOME.

Sneak peak.

Here is a portion of the painting I am working on currently. It is a gift (that I'm pretty sure my whole family already knows about, hence why it's okay I post this) for my family of our dog. She was put down in 2008 due to major health conditions. Poor baby girl. RIP to the best dog, ever.

I have a lot more work to do.... but sometimes when I look at it, I hate it. And other times, I love it. This is a clear indication that I am not finished with the painting. I guess I shall keep working the canvas until I am satisfied I have successfully honored my beautiful dog.

I have been so incredibly bad about blogging this past month. Seriously. However, to my credit, I was thinking long and hard about ending the blog. But, naaaa. I think I will keep on blogging.

I'm not going to lie. I am a disorganized person. Well, was. While my sister was visiting, she helped me organize, well, everything. I had art supplies all over the house, in every nook and cranny. She helped me set up LOGICAL locations and I feel lighter. I feel, more creative. Most likely because the energy can move positively--- and it doesn't get caught up somewhere unwanted. =]

My aunt and some of her lady friends are glass artists and they call themselves the Rocket City Glass Girls. While 1/2 of them were out visiting during the 4th, they asked me to help them create some lino blocks. So, that is what I currently am working on. I am drawing up, cutting up, and testing a series of blocks for the ladies to print on and use in their glass designs. Expect more on this later.

We went to Edgefield (a place I HIGHLY suggest everyone visits while in Portland). I love the dress (from Urban Outfitters) that I wore there.

After bath time, I help K get out of the tub... and he turns around... and waits... for BURRITO BOY! It makes him smile.

Wildlife Refuge

I took my sister and K to one of my favorite places, the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge. Too bad the mosquitoes were HORRIBLE, so we left shortly. I guess that's what we get for having on hell of a spring and late summer start.

The Forth

On the Forth of July, we had a big birthday celebration: our country's slash papaw's. Good family and friends flew in from Alabama to spend the week with us. It was divine. And let's just sum it up by saying we had a crazy good time.

We hiked Silver Star Mountain to start off her trip. I hiked it right after high school graduation (too long ago). It is a beautiful hike, but it is pretty tough at spots.

K and I went hiking today with my dear best friend and her boyfriend. It was pretty awesome. We hiked Chinidere Mountain. It's east of Portland, Oregon (2 hours) in the Columbia Gorge area. Here are some photos from the trip.

Part of the trail was on the Pacific Crest Trail! One day, I would love to spend a half a year to a year making my way through it. Ah. A girl can dream.

Well, I'm sure all the bragging about how great Kaegan's signing has been going just back fired in my face. I think the "terrible twos" have started... at 14 months. I'm very proud of him and his ability to sign to me, but regardless, he has been having full blown meltdowns the past few days. I'm not sure if it is related to teething (3 molars have cut through, one is still working it's way up) but I can tell you right now, I don't like it. He is very sweet most of the time but lately, if he doesn't get what he wants, he clenches his fists and screams, stomps, and... BITES. a;dlsjf. I have bruises all over my arms. It's so hard because I don't believe in spanking or the old fashion "bite him back" idea. I have tried to ignore it, to cry about it, to say "no", to explain why it hurts, to give him a time out, and probably 30 billion other ideas. And they all failed. Anyone have any words of advice?

Anyway, here are some sweet photos to end the post.

We went to a friends house a few weeks back... We took a stroll through some woodsy area near a park. Also, we made the tastiest vegan chocolate chip cookies with flax. YUM.

My sweet son and I went hiking today at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge. It was BEAUTIFUL and sunny and just fabulous. Today was the first day that it really felt like summer. It was over 80 and the sun was shining. Here are some photos from our hike. I took a lot of videos while we were there, so I am thinking about making another movie (which was totally fun doing).

Oh my goodness, I can't believe a month has gone by and I haven't posted anything! I have been extremely busy with motherhood and school. It's hard to keep up when I have a running and adventurous son, I need to practice Spanish, memorize Japanese and Korean art history, and read the numerous articles for my American cultural anthropology class. Thank GOD I only have three weeks--- then it's SUMMER TIME!!! So, let's just make this break official. I probably won't be posting anything soon. I need to finish out the term strong. Also, the last drawing is something I whipped up for a dear friend-- she is using it for a cover of a literary zine she is creating.

Kaegan and me!

My sister traveled from across the country to celebrate!

This photo is very magical!

My sweet son kept hugging and loving his friend Xyla. It was so precious. And he made me so proud because he is turning into such a loving and affectionate little man.

This was Kaegan's homemade cake! I used a recipe from wholesomebabyfood.com. It is all organic, healthy, wholewheat and natural. And did I mention, delicious! I added slices of banana to the middle, for an extra surprise!

Destroyed!Kaegan got a lot of wonderful gifts from our family and friends. Thank you everyone!

Overall, it was a successful first birthday party. A lot of good family and friends were there. Plus, Kaegan had such a wonderful time that he passed out while I was dressing him after his bath to clean up from the cake mess. I got the chance to talk with friends and family. Also, it was a beautiful day!!! I couldn't have asked for anything more. =]
